Summer Fun for Seniors
Carrie Dowling, OCPC, LCDCIII, CTTS
Assistant Manager, Prevention Education

Harbor is pleased to be offering the third year of WISE (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education). WISE is an evidence based, 6 week education and wellness program, offered at local senior centers and senior living facilities. Thanks to a continued grant through Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Lucas County, Harbor has served over 500 seniors over the past two years. We are actively seeking new sites to host the WISE program in Lucas County, at no cost. Upon successful completion, participants earn a free gift card.

Many times, all we hear about aging are the negatives about growing older. Not in the WISE program! We discuss that this stage of life can bring many benefits as well. Our participants report having more time to enjoy hobbies, spend time with family and friends, or just relax. Here are some fun ways our participants are enjoying the summer months:

Farmer’s Markets. Many local areas host farmer’s markets in addition to the large one on Saturdays in Downtown Toledo. Enjoy the fresh tastes of the season! Maybe try a new recipe, or grill a fruit or veggie you’ve never tried before.

"Check out" the library. Get lost in a stack of your favorite classics, or pick up that book by a popular new author. The main library has Brown Bag Summer Concerts on Wednesdays. For the schedule of this and other fun activities, please visit www.toledolibrary.org

Spend time with grandchildren. A trip to the zoo, a picnic lunch, or a scavenger hunt are a great way to spend an afternoon.

Get out in nature. We are so lucky to have so many amazing metroparks in the Toledo area. Lace up your walking shoes and explore!

Pokemon GO. Have you heard about the newest digital craze? Ask your grandchildren or kids in your neighborhood to show you what it’s all about. You’ll have fun and get your body moving all at the same time.

Day trips. We are only a couple hours away from Frankenmuth, MI, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, or the Short North in Columbus, just to name few. Enjoy a day of eating, shopping, and sightseeing! Most senior centers offer inexpensive excursions with a group.

Fairs and festivals. Summer into fall brings so many county fairs and festivals. It’s fun to check out the local food, music, and crafts, along with rides and arcade games. On Tuesday, August 2nd, the Ohio State Fair and the Ohio Department of Aging are offering a “Well Beyond 60!” Expo from 10 am- 5 pm. They are offering various health screenings and activities for senior citizens. Senior Day admission is only $4 for adults 60 and over. This list is only the beginning, and you certainly don't need to be a senior to enjoy these fun activities. The WISE program can come to you! If you are interested in hosting the WISE program, please contact Carrie Dowling at 419-214-3820 ext. 2839.
