Details HereAt Harbor, we support LGBTQ+ individuals. Our new programming is designed for ages 18–26 to promote mental wellness and prevent substance use disorders—especially the use of opioids, methamphetamines, and other harmful substances. We do this by:
- Creating safe, trauma-informed spaces that foster social connection for LGBTQ+ individuals.
- Educating and empowering LGBTQ+ communities to become informed, trauma-aware self-advocates.
- Building cultural gateways that help LGBTQ+ individuals access the broader behavioral health care system.
AFFIRM Adult Workshops
We offer AFFIRM Adult workshops designed to help LGBTQ+ adults build the coping skills necessary to reduce mental health challenges and behavioral risks. These workshops teach strategies to shift unhelpful thoughts, develop support networks, engage in affirming behaviors, and maintain hope in the face of anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination.
Monthly LGBTQ+ Wellness Group & Social Outings
Join us for our monthly LGBTQ+ Wellness Group, where we explore skills to improve mental well-being—from yoga and job interview prep to terrarium building and community potlucks.
Our Social Outings are held in partnership with local spaces like coffee shops, community gardens, and game parlors. Check back for upcoming events!
LGBTQ+ Health & Substance Use: The Facts
- Alcohol & Drug Use: Among LGBTQ+ young adults ages 21 and older, 1 in 3 (33%) report regular alcohol use, and 1 in 5 (21%) report regular marijuana use. Additionally, 11% report using a prescription drug not prescribed to them within the past year. (Source: The Trevor Project)
- Mental Health Disparities: LGB adults are over twice as likely as heterosexual adults to experience a mental health condition. For transgender individuals, the rate is nearly four times higher than for their cisgender peers. (Source: NAMI)
- Substance Use Disorders: Substance use disorders affect LGB adults at nearly double the rate of heterosexual adults. Transgender individuals are almost four times as likely as cisgender individuals to experience these disorders. (Source: NAMI)
- Substance Trends in the LGBTQ+ Community: LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to use substances including tobacco, marijuana, methamphetamines, and prescription drugs. Alarmingly, over 1.2 million LGBTQ+ people nationwide have misused prescription painkillers, opioids, or other prescription medications. (Source: NIDA, 2020)
- Unmet Treatment Needs: Two-thirds (67%) of LGBTQ+ individuals report needing mental health or substance use services—significantly higher than the 39% reported by non-LGBTQ+ individuals. Research highlights that this disparity is not due to personal shortcomings, but is a direct result of chronic minority stress, societal stigma, and cultural rejection.
