Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), is a disorder that makes it difficult for a person to pay attention and control impulsive behaviors. Although the symptoms of ADHD are usually first diagnosed in childhood, ADHD can continue through adolescence and adulthood. It is normal for children to have trouble focusing and behaving at one time or another. However, children with ADHD do not just grow out of these behaviors. Sometimes, the symptoms can be severe, can cause difficulty at school, at home or with friends. *ADD is an older term that’s now included under ADHD.
People with ADHD show an ongoing pattern of three types of symptoms:
- Difficulty paying attention
- Being overactive
- Acting without thinking
Diagnosis of ADHD requires a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed clinician, such as a pediatrician, psychologist, or psychiatrist with expertise in ADHD.
